Day
26 – 6-6-15 Saturday You guessed it – still raining and 43
degrees. We ate breakfast and checked the weather forecast for Seward
and Soldotna. Soldotna.looked better so I called a campground in
Soldonta. They had sites open so we decided to go there and go to
Seward on the return trip from Homer. Maybe the weather will be
better then. We hooked up the Toad and headed out about 8:30AM. After
about an hour the rain tapered off and then stopped and we saw the
sun for the first time in about 3 days. It was a pleasant drive with
some more really nice views. We arrived at the Klondike RV Park about
11AM and checked in and setup in site 11. Nice fairly new campground
with full hookups – some with 30AMP and some with 50AMP. We got a
50AMP pull through. A lot of the commercial campgrounds that we have
seen and stayed at in Canada and Alaska are just large open parking
lots with gravel and no vegetation. This one and the one we stayed at
in Tok have gravel parking pads with trees and vegetation between
some of the sites.
Rant:
I still don't understand why the people laying out the campsites put
the sewer connection to dump the holding tanks at the back of the
sites and the water and electrical connections about half way of the
site. The sewer and water connection needs to be about half way of
the site and the electrical connections more toward the rear of the
site. This campground and others we have used on this trip have the
sewer connection near the rear of the site and the electrical more
than halfway to the front of the site. Most Rvs have the electrical
connections toward the rear and the water and sewer more toward the
middle.
We
drove into Soldotna and stopped at the Visitor's Center and walked
out onto the fishwalk by the Kenai River. The fishwalk is a walkway
built along the banks of the river so tourist and fishermen can fish
and or view the river without disturbing the vegetation on the banks.
Our next stop was the Moose is Loose Bakery right up the street. As
you might have notice we are sampling all the bakery items we can
find that are reported to be good. This one lived up to its
reputation. They had several varieties of goodies and homemade
breads. They have one name “Road Kill Caramel Roll”. It is a
normal cinnamon roll that has been flatten to about 8” x 12” and
then baked until it is crispy. The place was really busy with
customers. I picked the Apple Fritter and Lena got a Raspberry Filled
Doughnut along with coffee and we also got a loaf of Apple Cinnamon
Bread to take with us.
We
drove down the road about 10 miles to Kenai but didn't see much that
interested us so we came back to the campground to do laundry and
some other chores.
