Alaska 2015 - Day 23 Talkeetna

Day 23 6-3-15 Wednesday  Well it was still drizzling rain this morning when we got up and it has continued almost all day. I worked on the problem slide for awhile but did not get it working this morning.

It was still drizzling rain so we donned our Frog Toggs and walked the ½ mile into the town of Talkeenta. The town is 14 miles down a paved spur road from the Parks Highway that runs from Fairbanks to Anchorage. The town sits at the end of the road. They have a nice paved walking/biking path all the way beside the road to the Parks Highway. Cinnamon buns seems to be a popular thing in Alaska and we had read that The Roadhouse on Main Street in town had good ones in three different types. The building was built in 1914. It has rooms to rent and a nice cafe. When we walked in the place was bussing with people eating breakfast. Seating is very informal – just find a seat at one of the many and various size tables in the 3 or 4 different rooms. We found seats at a table that would seat about 20 people, many were just finishing up breakfast. We ordered coffee and shared one of their Razzy Bun (cinnamon bun with raspberry). We talked to a couple at our table that had flown into Anchorage from Knoxville TN and two guys that had drove in from Texas. The two guys breakfast order came while we were talking and they had ordered what was called a half order of breakfast. I could not believe all the food on the plate. It was enough for two people. The couple from Knoxville got one order with two pancakes. They came on a regular size plate and they hung off the plate all the way around.

We walked around town and on down to the Susitna River. The town appears to thrive on tourist. There were several small businesses selling local crafts, cafes', fishing guides, ATV trail rides, airplane rides, boat rides, etc. We went to the local museum that is housed in the original schoolhouse for the area. On the way back to the campground we went back to The Roadhouse and bought a frosty bun, a nutty bun and a loaf of homemade sourdough bread to take with us.

After we got back to the campground I called Tiffin Motor Homes service department and the tech told we what to try to fix the slide. I did what he said and now the slide works. It appears one of the solenoids was sticking. I will see if I can get a spare shipped to me as we may have the problem again.

There is a body of water a few miles back up the road where we saw several float planes yesterday when we came in. Today we can hear them as they take off. And the Alaska Railroad tracks are right behind the campground and the town train station is just a short walk down the tracks. We have been seeing Princess Cruise Line buses coming and going all day from the train station.
