Canadian Maritimes July 16, 2019

Day 37 Tuesday July 16, 2019 I picked up our Ferry boarding pass just across the street a little after 6AM, ate breakfast and was at the ferry port by 7AM for our 2 hour ferry trip over to Blanc-Sablon Quebec. This was an Optional trip not included in the tour package but information was provided on how to book the ferry, etc.

We took the car not the motorhome. After getting off the ferry we were in Labrador in about 5 minutes. There is basically one main road in Labrador with a few little villages scattered along the way. The population is only about 27,000 which is about 50% of what lives in our home county. It is really some rough country side but very pretty and hardy any trees due to the rocky surface. We could see patches of snow of in the distance on the side of the hills and then we saw two large sections of snow just beside the highway that were down in a low area and appeared to be several feet deep.

There is a little village about 50 miles from the ferry port named Red Bay. Our motorhome (a Tiffin) was built in Red Bay Alabama so we wanted to go there to see what it was like. Most of our group that took the ferry also went. Seven or eight of the motorhomes on the tour are Tiffins. The village was very small but had a nice museum about the Basques fishermen and the whaling history but due to our schedule to get back to the ferry we did not have time to view all of it. We did get some t-shirts with Red Bay Labrador on the front and had a very good Fish and Chips lunch at the Whalers Restaurant before returning to the ferry port. On the way back we stopped on a bridge over the Pinware River and talked to a fisherman that had a  nice salmon he had just caught. He said he had caught 22 in the last 2 days and had to release several because they were over the size he was allowed to keep. This river has been fished for salmon  since ancient times and was also fished by Presidents Reagan and Bush.

There were a couple of other things to see on the way but there were so much road construction and other road delays we didn't have time to stop. We got back to the ferry port on time only to find out the ferry was close to an hour late getting in.

On the ferry trip back to St. Barbe we saw two large icebergs, two whales and several dolphins.

Nap time

When we got back the Wagonmasters had dinner prepared for us consisting of bean salad, cornbread pancakes and home made chili with dessert. Then we had our driver's meeting for tomorrow’s 84 mile trip to Viking RV Park in St. Lunaire-Griquet, Newfoundland.
