Home to Galax VA August 1-5, 2018

Day 1 Wednesday August 1, 2018 We departed home at 7:20AM on the beginning of a 31 day trip. After stopping for fuel for the motorhome and breakfast for us, we were on our way to Deer Creek RV Resort just across the state line of Virginia near Galax. We stopped at the Farmers Market in Greensboro to take a break, stretch our legs and get some vegetables. Then we were on our way and arrived at 1:45PM as a light rain came down. I had checked the Weather bug App on my phone so I knew it was predicting rain at 2PM and I wanted to arrive and setup before the rain.

We got setup in site 64 just before the rain started. We stayed in the same site last year. We are renting it from the owners. All the sites in the resort are privately owned and a few owners rent out theirs when they are not using them. The owners also own the vacant site beside it and both are for sale.

It rained off and on the remainder of the day so we relaxed and did some reading.

Day 2 Thursday August 2, 2018 We woke to more rain. I checked the Yelp App to see if the Fox's Cones and Coffee shop we visited several time last year in Galax was open today only to see that it was listed as permanently closed. We were very disappointed but decided to go to town anyway for breakfast. We drove into town and discovered the coffee shop was open but under a different name. It is now the Briar Patch Marketplace and Cafe. The prior owner decided to quit the business so the owner of the antique business that adjoins it reopened it. We were glad.

After leaving the coffee shop we picked up a local visitors guide and visited the art school gift shop across the street. The local crafts people had some really nice crafts on display. Then we returned to the RV resort for the remainder of the day to eat, read and watch it rain and rain and rain.

The couple that owns the site next to the one we are renting talked to us when we got back to the resort. They were washing their motorhome. He told us about some minor damage to their motorhome they received Wednesday just before they got here. They have a scratch down one of the storage doors near the rear of the motorhome. He said an 18 wheeler had forced him off the road and he bumped the guard rail. We noticed Wednesday afternoon after they arrived, that he was pointing at the storage door and was really animated and very agitated (MAD).

Day 3 Friday August 3, 2018 Well we woke to more rain. I sure wish this rain would shift to California where they are having all the forest fires. We had planned to go to the Tomato Festival in Independence VA today but all this rain has put a damper on that. It continued to rain until about 1PM when the sun finally came. Other than a couple of small showers it was clear the remainder of the day so we set outside under the little cabin porch and read and relaxed.

For supper we drove about ½ mile to the Mt. Cafe for some seafood. We can almost throw a rock to the VA/NC state line from the entrance to the resort and the cafe is just a short distance over the line into NC.

Day 4 Saturday August 4, 2018 Our first day of waking up with no rain. We did a walk around the resort, had breakfast and I did some maintenance on the motorhome water system. We drove into Galax to check out the Rythem Brew and Vine Festival. There didn't appear to be much to the festival to make us want to pay $10 entry fee, as we didn't like the music and we don't drink beer so we went to the Italian Garden restaurant for a pizza and then browsed/shopped in some of the shops and antique stores. We made another stop at the Briar Patch Coffee Shop. Late in the day we went over to the next site and talked with Gary and Nancy for awhile and swapped stories about our motorhome travels.

Day 5 Sunday August 5, 2018 No rain and the sun was shinning today so we drove some of the back roads and made a loop through Independence VA and on over to Sparta NC and came back along the Blue Ridge Parkway and stopped at the Blue Ridge Music Center and listen to the music jam they have on the breezeway from noon to 4PM.
