Cliffs of the Neuse State Park June 15-18, 2026

Day 1 Monday June 15, 2026

A short trip today to Cliffs of the Neuse State Park Campground for 4 nights. It is only about 37 miles from home. This is the campground we frequently went to when we were camping in a tent and then when we moved up to the “big time” and got an Apache Popup Camper.

I would leave work on Friday from Camp LeJeune, drive home, hookup the camper that Lena had packed and we would head here for the weekend. Back then almost everyone here was in a tent or a popup or similar camper. Our son was in diapers when we started coming here so that tells you how long that has been. I remember one time when we were here my brother Myron and his family were also here and we shared a campsite. One evening after we ate Myron and I played checkers. We had one game that lasted well over an hour and finally he won.

Now the state has converted 13 on the 34 sites into full hookup RV sites plus there are 3 cabins for campers that don’t have a camper.

We stopped at Bojangles in Beulaville for some lunch before arriving at the campground about 2pm and set up in site 5. All the RV sites are nice and level and well laid out and very spacious. I would have preferred smaller gravel on the sites but at least there is good gravel and not mud holes.

We sat outside this evening until almost 9pm and watched the fireflies. First time we have seen fireflies in a long time. There is also several cardinals around us and other birds and of course squirrels that are flitting from one tree to the next.

Day 2 Tuesday June 16, 2026

It took me several tries yesterday to get our Starlink Mini satellite antenna in a good position to get a signal. There are a lot of very tall pine trees around us that are blocking the view of the sky. I never did get a great signal so I did some research last night about the best direction to aim the antenna. I moved the antenna this morning and now it works better. This is only our third trip with the Starlink Mini satellite antenna and each campsite has had different views of the sky. You live and learn.

After breakfast I did some minor maintenance items on the Motorhome. It is much cooler today and we are enjoying being outside and relaxing. The birds, especially the cardinals and the squirrels have been busy today.

We had a very relaxing/lazy day. We did do a lap around the campground which took all of about 10 minutes.😂

Day 3 Wednesday June 17, 2026

We got just enough rain early this morning to spot up the dust on the Jeep.

We met our friend Kathy from Goldsboro this morning for lunch at McCall’s BBQ & Seafood Restaurant in Goldsboro. We have been to lots of PT Cruiser car shows, events and trips with Kathy and her late husband Dean when we all had PT Cruisers many years ago. We had a good get together and a good meal.

Then Lena and I drove to the old Downtown part of Goldsboro to see if the renovation of that area was complete. We went there several years ago and they were still doing a lot of street and building renovations. Today it looked like it was complete and looked really nice. It looked like most of the buildings were occupied now with some type of business and maybe upstairs apartments. We didn’t take any photos because the sun was so bright the photos would have been washed out looking.

Then we went to the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery to visit Dean’s gravesite. On the way back to the campground we stopped at Food Lion to get some chocolate and vanilla ice cream for an afternoon treat.

We had a pleasant afternoon outside. Our site has a lot of shade from all the trees around it but on the downside the trees block some of our Starlink signal. I guess one can’t have everything like you want it.

Day 4 Thursday June 18, 2026

It is getting really breezy, I guess from the tropical storm that is coming across the Gulf of America. We enjoyed our morning latte outside in the slightly cool breeze. It is due to get rather warm today.

We ticked another item off the bucket list today. We have heard about how good the BBQ is at Grady’s BBQ in Dudley. Well it is only about 5 miles from our campground so we went there for lunch today. The building is not much to look at but the BBQ is great. It is cooked with wood coals and the best BBQ we have had in a long time. I got black eyed peas and butterbeans with mine and Lena got black eyed peas and slaw with hers. The plates come with 4 real homemade hushpuppies.

I didn’t think I could eat all my meal due to the size of the potions but I managed to.

It lived up to all the reviews about how good the food was and they have it ready almost by the time you set down to a table. It has a small dining room that probably only seats 25 people or so and they offer take out also. We picked a good time to go as we were just ahead of a lot of workers that came in to eat so we were able to get a table and get finished before they were ready for a table.

We returned to the campground about 1pm and decided to pack up and go home. We reserved the site until noon tomorrow but the weather forecast shows about 80-90% chance of rain in the morning and the wind is picking up. We have lots of trees around and over our site so we don’t want to pack up in the rain in the morning or take the chance of a tree limb falling on the motorhome.

We got home about 3 pm. The wind was really gusting on the way home and probably will be stronger in the morning plus raining so we are glad we made the decision to leave this afternoon.

We had a good relaxing few days. The Cliffs of Neuse Stats Park campground is nice and very quiet. One of the electric window shades in the motorhome has quite working and an intermittent Fault has come back on our leveling system. So I have something else to add to my To Do list.
