Alaska Bound August 1-4, 2022

Day 94 Monday August 1, 2022 The rain drizzled all morning and it was cool and windy but we needed to get out some on our last full day in Homer so we went to the Harbor Bar and Grill for a bowl of Seafood Chowder. Great day for chowder. We had planned to go to Captain Patties to get the chowder but they were closed today. We ate there in 2015 and they also have good chowder.

After lunch we walked down the boardwalk to check out the shops. Lena, Tom and Gloria got T-Shirts but I didn't find one I liked. We walked over to the Salty Dawg Saloon. This is an old log building with a low ceiling that has been around a long time and has hundreds of dollar bills tacked to the ceiling and walls and a few items of women's apparel. The story is that years ago a man was to meet his friend there for a drink but his friend didn't show up so he tacked a dollar on the ceiling and told the bartender to use it to pay for his friend's drink if he came in later. So then people began to tack dollar bills up also. There must be a lax fire code because it looked like a fire hazard to me.

Small Boat Harbor

At 5PM the WM and TG prepared a hamburger supper for everyone with lots of side dishes. We were stuffed by the time we got back to the motorhome. We don't usually eat that late.

Day 95 August  2, 2022 It was very cool and windy this morning as we departed at 7:45AM for our 226 mile drive to  Anchorage. We got fuel a few miles down the road where they had the best price in this area ($5.49 a gallon for diesel).

We stopped in Soldotna at the Moose is Loose Bakery for coffee and pasties again. We won't ever be coming back to Alaska so we are hitting all the good bakeries that we know as we travel.

We had a real nice drive but the wind really picked up as we were traveling by Turnagain Arm between Portage and Anchorage. There were white caps on the water. Sure would have been a rough boat ride out there. We got to Golden Nugget RV Park in Anchorage about 2:30PM and setup in site 154. Just don't understand why people that build campgrounds can't get the site somewhat level. Even the ground between site here has dips and valleys in what little space there is between sites. We have just barely enough space between us and the next RV to pull the car in off the street and get the driver's door open without hitting the other RV.

We had a quick driver's meeting at 5:30PM and a little celebration for Gloria's birthday. They try to have the meetings when it will least effect our free time. Then Tom, Gloria, Lena and I went a couple of miles to the West Berlin German Restaurant for a Schnitzel. Lena and I got the Jagerschnitzel and it was very good but had to ask for a carry out box as the servings were so large. And amazing for Alaska it was only $15 a meal. Most meals are in the $30 range for a sit down meal in a restaurant. The dining room was getting really busy by the time we finished and there was only one lady waiting on all the tables and running the register. And we only saw one man in the kitchen. Yet there are homeless people all over the town camped out.

Day 96 August 3, 2022 We went to the Alaska Native Heritage Center. Fantasy RV Tours took care of the entry fees for us. We watched 4 young men demonstrate games their people play that trains them for living in the remote areas of Alaska, then we watched a film that showed how the training from the games helped them in the wilderness to survive.

We had lunch at Qdoba Mexican Grill and went back to the RV Park so Tom could walk Sugar. Then we drove out to the Anchorage Aviation Museum to learn more about the history of aviation in Alaska. The airplane has really opened up the outside world to the Native Alaska people that live in remote villages that do not have any road access.

A cousin maybe???

Lake Hood is the busiest float plane dock in the world and it is right beside the museum. After touring the museum we sat out on the terrace of a replica air control tower and watch dozens of float planes land and take off on the water. We could hear the air traffic controllers over a speaker as they handled the airplane arrivals and departures but none of us really understood the lingo. The weather had been perfect today, 70 degrees and sunny.

Oh that damage will buff right out!

Don't ask me?? I think it is to move float planes around but not sure.

Day 97 August   4, 2022 Lena and I went to Krispy Kreme this morning before stocking up on a few items at Walmart. Then returned to the RV Park to do laundry and some maintenance items on the motorhome before we depart here tomorrow for Denali.
