Day 23 Wednesday April 24,
2019 We went to breakfast at McDonald's in Elkin so we could use
their WiFi to update this blog. After a stop at WalMart for a few
groceries we drove some back roads that we had not traveled before,
on the way back to the campground. There were some large farms along
the route.
We returned to the
campground and enjoyed another day of great weather outside relaxing.
Same as yesterday I helped for a few minutes at the contact station
to check-in some campers. I checked in one couple from Germany. Now we
have seen campers from Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands and several
from Canada, not counting from several states in the USA. Those from
overseas had their campers shipped to the USA.
Day 24 Thursday April 25,
2019 We began our day at 8AM in the campground catching up
everything that had not been done the last two days while we were
off. After getting the reservation signs out for today we cleaned and
raked 20 or so sites.
Again today we played the
contact station shuffle twice to keep it open during lunch, etc. Late
in the day we put out 66 reservation signs for Friday since rain is
in the forecast from early Friday morning until after midday.

Day 25 Friday April 26,
2019 As predicted it was raining before daylight and it was light
off and on showers until about 1PM. We worked the campground between
showers. Between 3-4PM we had high wind gusts for about 3 hours. When
we checked the campground after the high winds stopped there were
some tents and screened in rooms blown upside down and the owners
were not at their campsites. We didn't bother any of them since the
owners were not around as we didn't want to be accused of damaging
any personal property.

Day 26 Saturday April 27,
2019 During the early morning hours we had strong winds again. We
heard some of the people in tents got into their cars and their tents
blew loose from the tent stakes. We saw someone's broken canopy in
the dumpster.
As usual for a Saturday we
had a busy day, putting our reservation signs, checking/cleaning
sites, picking up trash that had blown around during the high winds
and doing the contact station “shuffle” twice during lunch
breaks. We did get a few minutes to enjoy our chairs outside to read,
since the weather was nice.
On one of our rounds through
the campground I spotted a lady in a wedding dress then we saw a Just
Married sign on the back of a truck. We stopped and talked to the
mother of the bride. She told us her daughter camps here a lot and
wanted to get married in the park, so they got married in the old
Garden Creek Baptist Church that is an original wooden church near
the back side of the park. The church is still active for church
services and is used for weddings.
While we were working the
contact station we heard a call over the radio for need of EMS
service at the Widows Creek Falls. Someone had fallen and got hurt on
the rocks.
Day 27 Sunday April 28,
2019 I talked to Ranger Jeff, the park Superintendent, this morning
and he said the man that got hurt yesterday at the falls possibly had
a broken leg, hip and back. The man (about 30 years old) was
sliding/jumping down the falls on purpose....REALLY DUMB.
We only have reservation for
12 sites today but will probably get a few “walk-in” but there
will be about 70 sites vacated today and last night all 88 sites were
either occupied or reserved. We had to turn 3 people away because we
didn't have any open sites last night. Three sites that were reserved
last night were vacant this morning because the people didn't show up
and did not cancel. If they would have canceled we would not of had
to turn those 3 people away.
The weather was great today.
We put in a lot of hours today, as we do most Sundays, but we did get
to enjoy some relaxing time late in the afternoon with a bowl of ice
cream and a good book while setting out under the trees. While making
our final pass through the campground about 7PM we stopped and talked
to a couple from New Hampshire that was out for a walk. We shared
some stories about traveling with a motorhome.
Day 28 Monday April 29,
2019 Today is our last day here. We did our morning duties and
packed up all our outside stuff so we can leave early tomorrow
morning. Before we had lunch we cleaned several campsites and them
after lunch we relieved Jackie for her lunch break. We checked in
some people from Ontario Canada. That makes as least 4 sets of
campers from Ontario this month that we know of. As our final duty
this month we put our the reservation signs for Tuesday and Wednesday
and then turned in our time sheet and keys. We had 187.25 hours of
volunteer time this month. We don't get any pay for our time but the
volunteer time is reported to someone.
The trees around us have all
leafed out and it looks like a forest around us now. This morning I
had to get my ladder out and climb up to the top of our bedroom
slide. A pair of house wrens had carried lots of leaves up on top of
the slide to make their nest. I had to remove them before we
retracted the slide.
Day 29 Tuesday April 30,
2019 We departed for home about 8:45AM and arrived home about 3:30PM
after stopping for lunch and fuel for the motorhome.
